Good to know

New to the NHS? Here is how it works.

What the NHS is

The NHS is the UK’s public health service. Seeing your GP is free for everyone. Once you are registered you can book appointments, get prescriptions and be referred for any care you need.

International students

If your course is six months or longer, you pay the Immigration Health Surcharge with your visa, so NHS care is included on the same basis as a UK resident. GP appointments are free either way. Courses under six months should arrange private health insurance.

Moving from home

Already registered with a GP back home? When you register with us your records move across automatically, and they move back when you return home. You do not need to contact your old surgery.

When you register

Which details should I use?

Use your term-time address, your halls or student house, so your GP is local to where you live during the year. Use a personal email you will keep after you graduate, not your university email, because that usually stops working when you leave. You do not need an NHS number.
